PROMISING Filipino boxer Marvin Mabait makes his international debut this month.
The 25-year-old Mabait, who trains under the guidance of Nonito Donaire Sr. in San Francisco, takes on Mexican Johnny Garcia in Mexico on Oct. 11.
After fighting his whole career in the Philippines, Mabait makes a huge step-up in competition and faces his toughest test to date.
Garcia, 24, is the current World Boxing Organization (WBO) Latino super flyweight titleholder and has fought for a world title once. He is also World Boxing Council Fecarbox super flyweight titlist.
Garcia, 18-4-1 with nine knockouts, challenged current WBO super flyweight king Omar Narvaez last year and got knocked out in the 11th round in Argentina.
Garcia also fought but lost to unbeaten prospect Carlos Cuadras. He holds wins over former interim world champion Manuel Vargas, Oscar Ibarra and one-time world title challenger William Urina.
He has won back-to-back fights this year against Ibarra and Roberto Pucheta.
Mabait, on the other hand, is also a winner of his last two fights against veteran Rey Las Piñas and unheralded Jason Berwela. He suffered his first loss last year following a third-round technical knockout in the hands of Cebu-based Marco Demecillo in Lapu-Lapu City. He is 18-1-2 with 12 knockouts.
