A NEWBIE won the women’s division in the 3rd Warrior 50 (3W50) Ultramarathon race that started and ended at the Be Resorts in Lapu-Lapu City.
Jinggay Lugay, 37, crossed the finish line in 5:38.24, more than a minute ahead of Joy Postanes, who clocked 5:39.51. Melan Marquez finished with 5:57.25 for third.
Lugay, a nurse at the Cebu Doctor’s Hospital, started running two years ago after her doctor advised her to lose weight. With her husband Junjie’s support, she runs regularly with him.
Lugay was able to join several half marathon races and a full marathon in the Cebu City Marathon this year before joining the 50K.
“Wala ko ga-expect because of the presence of several experienced female runners who already joined several ultra marathon races. My goal was to just finish the race,” said Lugay.
Lugay was able to beat her fears with the support of her husband, who was beside her throughout the race and kept on telling her to maintain their pace until the finish line.
“We both finish the race,” said Lugay.
Lugay said this will be the beginning of her zeal for ultra-running because she was impressed with the kind of solidarity and bond she witnessed during the race.
“The support from the running groups of which we weren’t even members was very touching, ug mao gyud ang naka-encourage namo na runners na wala ma-belong sa particular group (and it encouraged us, runners, who were not members of any group),” said Lugay.
