TO celebrate the first anniversary of the canonization of San Pedro Calungsod, the Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod wants to celebrate the feast with a run dubbed the “Pedro Calungsod Run” on Oct. 13 at the Ayala Terraces.
What makes this race unique is the specialized medals that will be given to the finishers of the 3K, 5K and 10K runs.
The medal will have a portrait of the Filipino saint Pedro Calungsod and will be blessed before the race.
Organizers hope that Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma will grace the event.
The race will be held on the second day of the novena for the saint’s feast on Oct. 21.
Calungsod was a teenaged lay missionary, who served the Jesuit Mission in the Marianas as a catechist and was killed in 1672 for cathecizing in Guam. He was beatified in 2000 and was canonized last year.
The run was announced by Rev. Msgr Vicente L. Tupas Jr. during a press conference yesterday at the chapel in the South Reclamation Projection (SRP) together with Joel Garganera, Cebu Ultra-runners Club (CUC) president Tony Galon, race director Joel Juarez, fun run coordinator Orlando Osorio, Abrelaine Book, Theresa Gallardo, Olivia Ledesma, Danilo Ledesma and Mario Sanchez.
“We have decided to highlight the celebration with a fun run because we all know that this is a popular sport nowadays and this is a good avenue to give re-awareness among the participants about the canonization of Pedro Calungsod,” said Osorio.
Osorio added that they hope that they can attract more than 1,000 participants and already sent invitations to different schools such as the Don Bosco Technological Center, Colegio dela Inmaculada Concepcion and St. Theresa’s College.
“We are also holding this fun run as a fund-raising for the chapel and at the same time to raise funds for our educational scholarship program for our church servers or sacristans who are experiencing financial constraints,” said Tupas.
Tupas added that they do not require their scholars to join the seminary. This scholarship program is intended for deserving church servers.
The registration fees are pegged at P350 for the 10K division, 5K with P300 and 3K with P250, with registration centers at Runnr-Ayala, and the Calungsod Chapel at the SRP.
