USJ-R formalizes finals entry with 5-0 win-A A +A

[UPDATED WITH CORRECTIONS] UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) built up its momentum going into the tertiary division championships of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football tournament this Saturday night after cruising to a victory over Don Bosco College (DBC) yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
After a tough 2-0 loss to rival University of San Carlos (USC) last Sunday, USJ-R bounced back with an easy 5-0 win over DBC.
Gibb Agravante immediately scored a quick goal with just three minutes. Towering forward Rikko de Guzman hit his mark in the 22nd. Junifer Ebero and Julius Ramirez hit back-to-back goals in the 52nd and 53rd minutes, while Agravante closed the match with another goal in the 60th.
USC, on the other hand, is going into the tertiary division championship match off from a loss after dropping its last elimination game with a 5-3 defeat to University of Cebu (UC).
UC’s Christian Binondo hit the back of the net in the 27th minute. Elibirih Kingsley scored three straight goals in the 29th, 31st and 32nd minutes for a hattrick and a commanding 4-0 lead by UC going into halftime. USC fought back in the second half with Rundenis Palomo scoring back-to-back goals in the 49th and 67th minutes and John Paul Jarnaiz trimmed down the lead to just a goal, 4-3, after scoring in the 69th. However, Adrian Pitogo made the game far from reach with a goal in the 82nd minute.
In the other tertiary match, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) beat University of the Visayas (UV), 3-1.
Defending champion USJ-R faces USC for this year’s tertiary division title in a rematch of last year’s championship this Sunday afternoon.
USC has the edge in this season’s matchup after a 2-0 in its last meeting with USJ-R. Their other encounter ended in a scoreless draw.
UC, on the other hand, takes on USPF for third place.
In the secondary division, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) breezed past USJ-R, 3-0, while USPF didn’t break a sweat with a 3-0 default victory against USC.
SHS-AdC faces off with Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) in the secondary division championship match, while USPF is playing against USJ-R for third place honors on Sunday.
