MANILA — San Mig Coffee and Meralco Bolts break their 1-1 tie today in Game 3 of the best-of-five semifinal series of the 2013 PBA Governors Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Meralco B-Boys leaned on a strong support from the locals to post a 73-69 win and reduced the series to a best-of-three affair. Game time today is set at 7:15 p.m.
“We came out flat in Game 2. Maybe because that was our fourth playoff game in seven days. Now with the extra day, it will give us a chance to recharge our batteries both physically and mentally, said San Mig coach Tim Cone.
Even as 6’5” import Mario West continue to struggle in the field, Reynel Hugnatan, Cliff Hodge, Sunday Salvacion and Jared Dillinger picked up the slack and combined for 49 points and 29 rebounds to get back at the Coffee Masters, which defeated them in Game 1, 83-73, last Sept. 29.
The 29-year-old West of Hunstville, Alabama managed only 17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals which paled in comparison to Marqus Blakely’s 24 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
“It’s going to be close for both teams putting emphasis on defense. It’s going to be much more harder for us from now on. I think there will be no change in strategy as both like to play defense,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.
The Coffee Mixers, who settled for second at the end of the elimination with a 6-3 slate, were not totally dominated during the second game as they led Meralco in the three-point zone (33-23), field goal (38-30) and assists (21-11). However, they committed more turnovers (22-13) and that cost them the game.
