CEBU Blue Marlins Swimming Club’s (CBM) top tankers Michael Ichiro Kong and Karen Mae Indaya of the University of Cebu (UC) helped the team in securing the overall title of the Visayas leg of the 2013 4th Speedo G-League Series yesterday at the Cebu City Aquatic Center.
CBM won a total of 40 gold medals out of 109 events to come up with 751 points. They were followed by the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club swim team with 381 and Nautilus Swim Club came in third with 266 points.
Kong and Indaya lead the other gold medal winners who will take part in the G-League Long Course Swimming National Championship in December.
The duo were named the most bemedalled swimmers in their divisions, with Kong winning four golds and Indaya winning three.
Kong, 14, won four gold medals in the boys 200-meter and 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 1,500m freestyle.
He also fished out one silver in the 200m breaststroke.
In the team event, Kong anchored the CBM’s relay squad to win the 4x50m freestyle relay, where he was joined by Val Andre Chiu of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and Elijah Belleza and Clarence Gabunada.
Indaya, on the other hand, won three gold medals coming from the girls 200m and 50m freestyle and the 100m backstroke.
Kong has competed in several G-Leagues but he is working his hardest this year since the stakes are higher.
The winners in Cebu will compete in the national finals and those who excel in the nationals could be picked to be part of the national youth team.
“This is my fourth G-League experience and I’ve been in the national competition several times but what makes this national finals very important to me this year is that it will be a qualifying competition for the PHL Youth team, that will see action in the Southeast Asian Age Group Competition next year,” said Kong.
Kong hopes that he and Indaya will qualify and represent the country in the prestigious competition. Former CBM Anthony Linn Navarro and Diane Cañeda, were able to represent the country in the same competition.
