AALIYAH Ricci Mataragnon and Kristiane Lim took the women’s and men’s sprint distance titles of the Hunat Sugbu Triathlon Race in the Municipality of Oslob.
The biggest win of the day, however, was that of Mataragnon, who, after countless tries, finally defeated Shaia Ruth Uy. Mataragnon, a 13-year-old stalwart from the Sacred Heart School Hijas, won the sprint distance in 1 hour 49:32 minutes and enjoyed a six-minute lead over Uy.
Christine Joy Guillergan came in third with 2:08:06
“I have been racing against Shaia and this is the first time that I finally beat her,” said Mataragnon who settled for a fourth place finish in the Ironkids last August.
Mataragnon said the win came as a surprise to her because she only hoped to secure one of the top five spots because of the presence of Uy and Cebu’s top tanker Loren Dale Echavez.
“I cried when I learned that I won, I really didn’t expect to win because of Echavez and Uy. All I did was race at my own pace. But I had trained hard for this as well,” said Mataragnon.
This is the second time that Mataragnon joined a sprint distance race. Her first race was in Maasin, Leyte, where she came in second.
The sprint distance covers a 750-kilometer swim, 20K bike and 5K run.
Meanwhile, Echavez, Cebu’s top tanker, who had dabbled in triathlon relays, debuted in the full distance but failed to make the podium.
“I had fun with the experience. Although, grabe lang jud ang swim kay bawod kayo. Kato pa ko naka experience nga grabe kaayo ka hinay ang akong swim, then kaduha ko natumba sa bike but sa run it was okey,” said Echavez.
In the men’s sprint distance, Lim clocked 1:42:01 to win. He was closely followed by Yuan Chiongbian with 1:42:19, and Ralph So with 1:42: 41.
Justin Chiongbian, who recently won in Singapore, managed to finish fourth but he passed out after reaching the finish line.
In the standard distance, Abet Biagan took the men’s title after finishing in 2:14:25. He was followed by Elmo Clarabal with 2:14:19 and Ralph Arche with 2:25.
Lohriz Echavez-Lopez, on the other hand, took the top honors in the women’s division with 2:46:16, while Nia Aldeguer came in second with 2:48:32 and Hannah Lou Galo clocked 2:57:22 for third.
The age-group top finishers in the men’s division were PJ Castillo (25-29), Allan Leith Ting (35-39), Cary Marlowe Remotigue (40-44), Richardo Paulo Yusay (45-49) and Jose Richardo Dizon (50 and above). The winners in the women’s division are Natalie Joy Sy (18-29) and June-Marq Ocana (35-39).
Topping the relay event are Captain A’s Seafood Grill of Joel Juarez, Michael Ichiro Kong and Monica Huertas clocking 2:45:16, DX Tri team of Christine Sesante; Januarius Paglinawan and Dexel Christian Tiu with 2:53:42; and Ronda 69 of Earl Daniel Dumadagal, Jon Vildoso Ladawn and Marie Mirafuentes with 2:54:06 for third.
