THE University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors chess team opened up a new chapter of domination as they ruled the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s tournament in the USC South Campus.
USC dethroned defending champions University Cebu (UC) Webmasters, to bounce back from a dismal fifth place finish last year.
The USC Men’s team, made up of Christian Yves Fiel, Steve Ursua, Spencer de Guzman and Shawn Patrick Osorio, bagged the gold medal after collecting a total of 19.5 points.
UC settled for second with 17.5 points.
The UC team is bannered by Diego Abraham Claro, Johnny Romero, Bernardo Ruelo Jr. and Neil Edrian Gelig, while champion University of San Jose-Recoletos settled for the bronze medal after finishing half a point behind UC.
USJ-R Jaguars had Ramil Wadim, Jethro Esplanada, Marq Gabrielle Balbona and Francis Salingay.
The women’s title, however, remained with the Lady Jaguars as Dianna Rose Pabatang, Jessa Marie Balbona, Jazzelle Villarin and Cecille Lumapac won the gold after scoring 21.5 points.
USJ-R was 2.5 points ahead of the USC Lady Warriors, which had Shairah Mae Monsalud, Keith Claire Moralla, Cristina Hazel Sato and Eleonor Laurito. The UC team of Camel Socorro Loquez, Queenilyn Torres, Marvie Abucay and Venice Lumapac placed third with 14.5 points.
The UC Baby Webmasters pulled the rug from under the fancied USC-Basic Education Department as they won the secondary boys title by 1.5 points, 20.5 to 19.0.
The team of Jethro Ysmael Caparino, Edsel Vosotros, Duane Borgonia and Christian Pondoyo took home the gold over John Francis Balbona, Jeffu Durog, Jonas Dustin Bajo and Ryan Fernando of USC-BED.
