CEBU City can have a coliseum of its own, but Mayor Michael Rama clarified that somebody has to ask him to before he can act on the project.
“Write me a letter so I can have a basis in putting up a coliseum. Because I might be misunderstood that it is my own initiative knowing that I myself play basketball as a pasttime,” Rama told reporters.
This pronouncement came during Game 5 of the 2013 Cesafi College Championship last Oct. 3 at the Cebu Coliseum.
It was during the long wait for the resumption of the game while Rama chatted with the sportswriters when he candidly answered questions regarding the idea of building a modern sporting arena that is owned by the Cebu City government.
“I don’t want to act on it on my own. But if somebody asks for it through a letter, and if we will have enough budget for it, then why not? It’s for the good of the city, anyway,” Rama added.
The mayor, being a basketball player in his youth, is a regular presence in many basketball championships including the many Cesafi finals, where he had the witnessed overflowing attendance of the crowd.
The largest he had ever seen was the 2011 finals when he had to lead the “clearing” of the courtsides as spectators spilled over the endlines.
Although last Thursday’s scenario was different, the main problem was the full capacity crowd that added humidity inside the venue that caused the electronic scoreboard to malfunction.
The clamor to have a new coliseum started back in the defunct MBA days when the Cebu Gems’ games were always at full capacity.
Being a premier city, Cebu City is in dire need of a new arena, most conveniently operated by the city government, where sports activities like basketball, boxing, concerts and others could be held.
Bearing PBA games are currently held at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City because Cebu City has no other venue to offer aside from the Cebu Coliseum.
If Rama will be able to convince the city council to build a coliseum, he said the most suitable site would be the area where the Senior Citizens Park is located.
It would be an ideal site since it is located in front of the new Cebu City Hall, and it also provides a panoramic view of both of its thriving harbor as well as its lush mountains.
