PHL poomsae squad continues non-stop training-A A +A

THE RP National Poomsae squad is in deep training for the biggest Poomsae tournament of the year.
After a brief training camp in South Korea, the national team is back in the Philippines for its stint in the 8th WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Bali, Indonesia on Oct. 31 to Nov. 3.
“They are back and are continuing their training in Manila under visiting coach Master Jeong,” Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) Region 7 chairman Tony del Prado told Sun.Star Cebu. “(They had) two weeks of intensive training in South Korea and another four weeks in Manila.”
The team started training for the world meet weeks before its training camp in South Korea, which del Prado believes is a huge help for the squad.
The RP National Poomsae team includes four Cebuano jins – Team Cebu coach and RP team veteran Glenn Lava, world women’s Poomsae champion Mikaela Calamba, Rinna Babanto and Mcavyngyr Alob.
Calamba is back to defend her crown in the tournament. Despite being the youngest, at just 15 years old, she still took home the gold in the Freestyle Female event in last year’s edition in Colombia.
“Barring injuries, she (Calamba) should be able to defend her crown. But we are also excited for our Cebu coach, Glenn Lava who will compete in the team category. He has a legitimate chance of winning together with JP Sabido and Ernesto Guzman of NCR,” said del Prado.
On the other hand, another Cebuana jin, Nica Garces, is bound for South Korea for further training.
The 14-year-Garces, the “Most Outstanding Female Cadet Player” in the Manuel V. Pangilinan Best-of-the-Best Taekwondo Championships last month, is leaving for South Korea with the rest of the RP National squad on Oct. 27.
