USJ-R, USPF hope to end jinx-A A +A

TWO teams hope the jinx will finally end this year.
The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) men’s collegiate team looks to secure its first championship title in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball as they face the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R), the multi-titled team hoping to get back into the championship track, at the start of the best-of-three finals series tonight at the USJ-R Basak Campus Gym.
USPF, whose best finish so far is runner up for many seasons, hopes to finally win the title this year.
“They have a big chance to win this year’s championship title. Grabe ang ilang fighting spirit,” said USPF coaching committee member Joerem Yu.
Yu added that USPF’s Edmar Bonono has showed consistency all through the season and he will be banking on him, along with setter Roque Cesar Navarro in their quest for their first title.
“The team has also a lot of new improved players like John Tormis and Troy Imperial.
We also have a good combination of our new and old liberos Jun Patrick Villaflor and Winston Bagolor,” said Yu.
Meanwhile, USJ-R head coach Grace Antigua is also eyeing to reclaim their dominance in the tournament.
USJ-R last won the men’s title in 2010 and it has eluded them since.
According to Antigua, they could not tell just yet how this tournament will turn out judging on their head-to-head this season.
During the elimination round, USJ-R lost to USPF but was able to beat them during the semifinal round.
“In the elimination we lost to USPF but it was a non-bearing game. Then we beat them in four sets in the semifinals. We will make sure that we will not be complacent. We will treat each game in this series like it’s a do-or-die game,” said Antigua.
Antigua added she finds USPF a very solid team this year but hopes that her team will deliver what they have been practicing on.
“Playing in the best-of-three finals kay maka add sad og pressure,” said Antigua.
In the boys high school division finals, it will be a battle between the reigning champion team of USJ-R against the University of San Carlos.
