THE Southwestern University’s (SWU) Lady Cobras showed no mercy and crushed the Cebu Doctors’ University (SWU) Lady Stallions in straight sets 25-16, 27-25,25-12 in Game 1 of the best of three finals series in the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. women’s collegiate volleyball final at the Aznar Coliseum last Tuesday.
In the girls secondary division, SWU beat the University of San Carlos (USC), 25-21, 14-25, 25-21, for a 1-0 lead.
Game 2 of both the high school and collegiate divisions will be played tonight and the SWU teams will be going for a sweep.
SWU and CDU, in the finals for the first time, had a close battle at the start of the first set but Marilyn Llagoso, Janelle Cabahug and Shenna Quino took turns in attacking CDU to take the lead for SWU.
The first set win seemed to have gotten SWU complacent and the CDU, bannered by alumni of the vaunted Pajo National High School volleyball team, surprised the veterans of SWU with Athena Sucalit, Apple Roiles and Danica Molinas leading the attack to force a 20-20 deadlock.
The SWU Cobras started to panic and committed several errors and Molinas got SWU the lead with a beautiful drop shot for 22-21.
SWU evened the match at 22 but Roiles scored on another drop to lead a two-point swing for set point, 24-22. However, Llagoso and Paden foiled CDU and led an SWU rally as they scored five of the last six points to take a 2-0 lead.
Despite losing a close second set, CDU didn’t let up but the Cobras were just too much and they leaned on Evan Jane Genargue, Llagoso and Paden on defense to seal their Game 1 win.
Former SWU Lady Cobras mainstay Danika Gendrauli, a member of the Philippine team who is now playing for Team Cignal in the Super Liga, was overwhelmed with her former squad’s victory and hopes SWU will give their all in Game 2.
“I am happy that the team was able to win Game 1. however, I have observed that the team didn’t show what they could do during the whole game. But I know that in Game 2 this Thursday, the Lady Cobras will show what they are made of and I have all the confidence that the team will win this year’s title,” said Gendrauli Gendrauli is in Cebu for a short break and will be back in Manila next month for the second season of the Philippine Super Liga.
Meanwhile, CDU Lady Stallions head coach Rolando Manayon said he is satisfied with what the team has achieved this year.
“The team started as a nursing team during the intramurals and turned into the team that represented CDU. Win or lose, I am still happy with how the team performed this year, we didn’t just reach the semifinals but the finals,” said Manayon.
According to Fr. Manayon, it was only three years ago that CDU has started fielding a men’s and women’s volleyball team and they always failed to advance to the semifinals.
“We will fight to the end. We will adjust and play our best,” said Fr. Manayon.
SWU coach Jordan Paca said that his team started playing complacently during the middle of the the second set and he hopes they will not make the same mistake in Game 2.
