Cebu Coliseum old but sturdy-A A +A

IT HAS gotten a lot of flack as of late for being too old, but 51-year-old Cebu Coliseum is safe and sound.
The new Cebu International Convention Center was damaged and several newer buildings took a beating from the 7.2 magnitude earthquake, but the Cebu Coliseum Complex Inc. (CCCI) remains intact.
CCCI assistant manager Susan Bacalso told Sun.Star Cebu that aside from a truss beam at the stage area that fell during the earthquake that shook Cebu and Bohol Tuesday morning, the coliseum is in good condition.
“Naa lay nahulog nga truss beam sa may stage area nga gi-wielding na pod og balik, wala may lain damage (at the coliseum). Gi-check man dayon sa maintenance sa UC human sa linog. Gipadalhan dayon ni (UC chancellor) ma’am Candice (Gotian-uy) og engineers aron i-survey ang damage pero kadto ra man (referring to the truss beam),” Bacalso said.
On Nov. 17, Cebu Coliseum will host a bearing PBA Game between sister-teams Meralco Bolts and Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals, the first since 2006.
“Ang flooring hinoon, naa na man nadaut adto sa Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) pa lang. Mao na amo gi-ayo karon to prepare it for the PBA game. Pero sa structure wala man gyud intawon damage. Pasalamat na lang mi kay wala sad gyud na unsa ba,” Bacalso added.
In Game 5 of the Cesafi, the game was halted for about two hours after the game clock got busted during the game. The game between the University of the Visayas and the Southwestern University continued resorting to manual timing and scoring. UV won the title.
The Cebu Coliseum was built in August 1962, and ever since, it has become the center for sports, entertainment and huge gatherings in Cebu.
The coliseum has hosted bigtime boxing, MMA and wrestling promotions, countless basketball games, the Holiday on Ice, hundreds of concerts by foreign and local artists, political rallies, religious events and graduation rites.
“Gisiguro gyud sa UC nga walay dakong damage ang coliseum kay duna baya upcoming nga graduation next week. Mo graduate ang Octoberians unya aside ana puno pa gyud og bookings ang coliseum,” she said.
Aside from the 39th PBA Philippine Cup opening day game, the coliseum will also host a pre-season tournament, which will see three PBA teams and a local basketball team on Nov. 7-9.
