A GM norm might be out of reach, but the experience he can get from the 3rd Indonesia Open Chess Championship could help Cebuano IM Kim Steven Yap in his next attempt to earn the elusive norm.
His loss to Indian GM GN Gopal (2527) on the ninth round scrapped Yap’s (2417) chances to earn the norm for good.
After struggling in the second to the fourth round, Yap suddenly found his chances of earning a norm after pocketing four straight victories to score 5.0 points after eight rounds.
However, his hopes were dashed when he lost to Gopal then drew with Vietnamese Fide Master (2357) on the 10th round. In yesterday’s final round, Yap who drew with GM Enamul Hossain (2445) of Bangladesh to finish the tournament with 6.0 points.
