WITH less than two weeks before the much anticipated Pinoy Pride XXII – “The Revenge” boxing show, Arthur Villanueva gets a new opponent.
Instead of former world title challenger Jose Cabrera, the 24-year-old Villanueva is now taking on Mexican Edgar Martinez on Oct. 26 at Waterfront Hotel and Casino.
“Cabrera had a problem with his papers for his passport,” ALA Promotions vice-president Dennis Cañete told Sun.Star Cebu.
Although Martinez’s credentials are not as impressive as that of Cabrera, who fought for a world title twice, Cañete still believes that he is a threat.
“A fighter with seven losses is always dangerous because they have nothing to lose. He would take advantage of the situation of Arthur being highly-ranked. We told Arthur’s team to prepare more,” he said.
Villanueva is rated No. 2 in the World Boxing Organization (WBO), N. 5 in the International Boxing Federation (IBF), No. 6 in the World Boxing Association (WBA) and No. 13 in the World Boxing Council (WBC).
Martinez is 16-7 with 10 knockouts. He has fought the likes of Sammy Gutierrez and Ivan Morales, the unbeaten younger brother of Mexican legend Erik Morales.
After losing to Gutierrez via a third round technical knockout, Martinez has won six straight fights.
Unbeaten Genesis Servania takes on former interim WBA super flyweight champion Rafael Concepcion for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental super bantamweight crown in the main event.
