MARY Grace Delos Santos and Mary Joy Tabal took the top two spots in the 16.8 King of the Road (KOTR) in Malaysia yesterday.

“It was a very challenging race. The route had a series of ups and downs and it seemed there was no flat stretch. We also passed through two tunnels,” Tabal said in Cebuano.
Tabal was the 2011 KOTR women’s champion and was not was able to compete last year after delos Santos won the Philippine leg. KOTR is composed of five qualifying races in in the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
This year, Tabal won the Philippine leg and beat Delos Santos but the organizers decided to send two representatives in the women’s category this year.
“Even though I came in second, I am happy because I was able to improve my time. I am also happy Grace and I got the top two spots,” Tabal said. “Grace is very fit now as she is preparing for the Southeast Asian Games.”
The 24-year-old Tabal said she was trying to stay close but then got cramps on her shin after two kilometers, forcing her to slow down.
