REIGNING Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers scored their fourth straight win to top their bracket in the University Games basketball tournament at the University of St. La Salle Gym in Bacolod City.
Yesterday, UV capped its run with a 75-63 win over University of San Agustin- (USA) Bacolod in the tournament that attracted 20 teams from all over the country.
With the no.1 slot for Bracket B already in the bag, coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. had the luxury of sitting his starters that allowed USA to put up a good fight against UV second stringers.
Cesafi 2012 Rookie/MVP Hernal “Wowie” Escosio topscored for UV with 17 points and Steve Cedrick Akomo contributed 12.
“Gipa rest ko na mga starters ko at gibabad nako ang bench kay non-bearing game na man to mao wala natambakan og dako. Possible makontra namo sa crossover quarterfinals kay ang San Carlos (USC) karon sabado kon modaug sila sa St. Benilde ugma,” Belano told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Their win yesterday came after their 94-84 mastery over the UAAP’s Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles last Wednesday, where five of UV players scored in double digits.
Escosio again topped UV with 23 points, John Abad had 22, Akomo made 16 and Leonard Santillan and Francisco Arong each had 10 points in that win. Kieffer Raven made 20, Jerei Marlon Pingoy added 15, Matthew Capacio scored 14 and Anton Asistio finished with 1o for the former five-time UAAP champions.
UV opened its campaign with an emphatic 76-46 win over University of Immaculate Conception of Davao City last Monday then dropped a head-turning 115-56 win over the Holy Angel University of Angeles City, Pampanga last Tuesday to complete.
The other top teams are NU Bulldogs (Bracket A), St. Francis of Assisi (Bracket C), University of Sto. Tomas (Bracket D), Ateneo Team B (Bracket E) and Rizal Technological University Heavy Bombers (Bracket F).
However according to Belano Ateneo-B and RTU were not given automatic slots to the quarterfinal round and will play in the playoffs today.
