Lancers win bronze-A A +A

THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers brought home the consolation bronze medal following a 100-88 victory over UAAP runner-up University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers in the 2013 University Games basketball tournament at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City yesterday.
Unlike in the semifinals, when the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate champions got routed by Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles Team B, 75-49, the Lancers regained their fire and composure to salvage a medal in the tournament participated in by 30 teams from all over the country.
“I told them to play like there is no tomorrow, like what Sir Eddie (Gullas) had told us. Then we stuck to our game plan, and that was to limit the production of (Karim) Abdul,” UV head coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. told Sun.Star Cebu.
The game was closely fought from the start until the dying minutes of the third period as both teams were tied at 61.
It was Arvie Cabanero who sparked the strong rally of the Lancers toward the close of the penultimate period as he sank eight straight points to put UV ahead 69-61 for good.
The two schools played a free-wheeling basketball game in the final period just as spit -fire John Abad took care of business and the Lancers outscored the Tigers 31-27 to pocket the bronze medal.
“We played with a lot more hustle compared to our game yesterday (last Friday). My players were playing with pride as a champion. It was a close game from the start,” Belano said.
Abad scored the game high 33 points, Hernal Escosio added 20, Cabanero finished with 14 and Raffy Octobre added 11 for the Lancers.
UV was playing without its prolific Cameroonian center Mike Harry Nzeusseu, who was given a rest after the five-game championship series against Southwestern University Cobras early this month.
