DEFENDING champion Gen Nagai continued to play near flawless golf as he padded his lead in class A of the boys division after the second round of the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club Challenge Junior Golf Tournament in Pardo, Cebu City.
In the girls’ division, Alta Vista’s Gabee Crystal surged to the top with a strong performance.
Nagai of Cebu Country Club fired one-over-par 71 strokes yesterday for an aggregate of 144 in the 15 to 17 years old bracket. Nagai again bucked a rather bad start as he double-bogeyed the par-5 10th hole teeing off on the back nine.
He went four-over-par after bogeys on the par-3 13th and 15th but came back with birdies on the 16th and 17th to finish the back nine at two-over-par 38.
For his homestretch on the front nine, Nagai birdied the par-4 3rd then the par-3 6th to go back to even-par, but a bogey on hole No. 9, which plays as a par-4 for this tournament instead of the usual par-5, put him at one-over-par for the round.
Jonas Magcalayo of The Junior Golf League (TJGL) shares the second spot with Alta Vista’s Wei-wei Gao with identical aggregates of 153 strokes. Magcalayo fired rounds of 77 and 76.
Gao, who is still 14 years old, but opted to play in the older division, was only a stroke behind Nagai after the first day, but struggled with a nine-over-par 79 Wednesday.
Del Monte’s JJ Gamolo is at fourth spot with 157 strokes on rounds of 83 and 74. Alta Vista’s Anton Pastoriza rounds up the top five with a total of 159 strokes (82-77).
In the girls’ division, Gabee Crystal took the lead with a five-over-par 75 strokes performance on the second day for an aggregate of 163 strokes as she shot 88 on the first round. She holds a four-stroke lead going to Thursday’s final round.
Crystal opened the second round on the back nine with a double-bogey on the par-5 10th and later went three-over-par with a bogey on the 11th. She took a stroke back with a birdie on the 12th, but was back to three-over-par after a bogey on the par-3 13th.
She then went four-over-par with a bogey on the 1st hole but recovered with a birdie on the par-3 2nd. (PR)
