Mendoza: NBA is here and PBA has got company-A A +A
Friday, November 1, 2013
AFTER the PBA is the UAAP, NCAA and, yes, OK, the PBA-D League. These are the basketball tournaments nearest the heart of Filipino basketball fans. Next, of course, will be the NBA. In fact, to many, the NBA comes next after the PBA.
Didn’t we all go crazy over the recent pre-season NBA game that was played at the MOA Arena in Pasay City?
We all knew it would just be an exhibition, practically a warm-up, but still, we wanted it seen live. Nothing was at stake in the Houston-Indiana game but still, we desired watching it. There’s nothing more thrilling than watching live some of the world’s greatest cagers strut their wares—in the flesh.
Ticket prices don’t matter. We close our eyes to realities when an urge, an impulse, strikes the heart. We are as blind as lovers when feelings drown out reasons. Wads of bills become mere pieces of paper to start a bonfire.
Didn’t we pay P35,000 for a single ticket to watch that tame NBA game at the MOA, where Jeremy Lin, James Harden, Dwight Howard and Paul George hardly flexed their muscles?
A nephew of mine bought two of those tickets for a friend he just couldn’t say no to.
“He’s more than special, Tito,” my nephew said to me. “I just earned a couple hundred thousand bucks from a car sale he had helped me clinch.”
You earn some, you lose some.
A net of 130K isn’t bad, I told him. Anytime, I’d take that; make that 30K, I’d even be gladder than maybe Freddie Aguilar bagging his 16-year-old trophy. (Oops, joke-joke! Love has no price—true love, that is.)
We see Derrick Rose, the 2011 MVP, back for the Chicago Bulls, only to lose their debut game to 2012 and 2013 MVP LeBron James and to the defending champion Miami Heat.
But while Rose is back in harness, Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma and Kobe Bryant of Los Angeles are still in sick bay.
But the season has just begun and, with 82 games on tap for each team, no squad can be so sure of making it to the NBA Finals in June. Westbrook and Bryant, too, might just be back when the grunt and grind time have come.
Meanwhile, let’s sit back and relax, and enjoy the ride.
