CEBUANO behemoth June Mar Fajardo credits his vast improvement to the encouragement of his teammates and coaches at the Petron Blaze Boosters during the 38th PBA Governors Cup.
Fajardo, who is back in Cebu for the short holidays, told Sun.Star Cebu that his teammates played a major part in his domination in the season ending conference.
“Gi-encourage ko sa akong mga teammates ug sa mga coaches. Nakatabang pod ang akong pag ka member sa Gilas Pilipinas. Pero ang dako nga nakatabang nako kay si Danny I (Ildefonso) gyud,” said the Pinamungajan native center.
Fajardo and Ildefenso had extra one-on-one sessions with the former back-to-back PBA MVP.
“He taught me post moves on both sa defense and offense. We work for extra hours after our practice,” said the former UC Webmaster star player who missed being the Finals MVP after his team lost to San Mig Coffee in Game 7 of Governor’s Cup championship series.
Fajardo also said he will work harder to improve next season.
“I will work hard to improve my skills. You only need hard work and to follow what the coaches say and of course, my mentor Danny I,” he said.
Next season, Fajardo is expected to be joined by his former rival in Cebu, Greg Slaughter, who is projected to the no. 1 pick in the PBA draft.
“First of all, I would like to congratulate Slaughter for being in the draft. Kahibawo ko dako kaayo og chance nga ma no.1 overall pick siya. Naa na pod lain nga Cebuano nga makasulod sa PBA,” said Fajardo who was last year’s no.1 pick.
Fajardo and Slaughter, who played for UV Green Lancers, spent three years facing each other in the Cesafi ranks before the latter transferred to Ateneo de Manila University to play for the Blue Eagles.
“Honestly, maglisod ko against Slaughter because of his height advantage pero paninguhaon lang nako nga makatabang ko sa akong team.
Daghan ang nag sulti nga balik na pod kuno among rivalry sa Cesafi, pero sa akong part, trabaho lang ko,” he said.
Before leaving for Manila, Fajardo will spend few days in the city and is expected to visit his alma mater – the University of Cebu.
