BILLIARDS is now a part of the school sports calendar as it will debut as a demonstration sport in the 23rd Cebu City Olympics, which will open doors on Wednesday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).
Some events will already start today so competitors can finish the tournament on time.
The event will determine who will represent Cebu City in the the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet later this year.
In the tournament launching held at the CCSC conference room yesterday, the organizers, led by Cebu City sports division superintendent Rhea Mar Angtud and DepEd Cebu City sports coordinator Zenaida Gocotano, said they are ready to hold the 21-event meet, which also has four demonstration events.
Present during the event were the different coaches and tournament managers and members of the different support groups, including those from the Cebu City Fire Department and the Cebu City Sports Commission.
The events that will start today are volleyball, football and swimming.
The swimming event has to start early because of a national competition on Nov. 8, while volleyball and football drew a huge number of participants.
Aside from billiards, the other demonstration sports in the Cebu City Olympics are wushu, wrestling and futsal.
However, it was only in wrestling that the organizers had trouble finding entries.
“We did not have a problem in the three other events. DepEd however found it challenging to find participants in wrestling. All these sports are now in the Palarong Pambansa,” Ballesteros told Sun.Star Cebu.
However, the organizers decided to stick with the point system scoring this year despite adopting the Olympic medal system in both the Cviraa and Palarong Pambansa.
Among the events are archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, dancesports, folkdance, football, gymnastics, karatedo, tennis, scrabble, sipa and sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball.
The opening ceremony will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, which will be highlighted by the selection of muses and the different school presentations.
