THE ultimate showdown is happening on Dec. 15 when the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) holds its 2013 Grand Finals at the Lola Soling’s Barkada Grill and Restobar in Casuntingan, Mandaue City.
Twelve players who won the monthly qualifying tournaments will be competing to become this year’s champion.
Back to defend his title is last year’s champion and August winner Rey Flores, a retired ship captain who now teaches chess to the young players in the north district of Cebu City.
Posing to snatch the title from Flores are the perennial grand finalist Maggi Dionson, who won the April tournament, and National Master Arnold Cadiz, the February qualifier.
January winner and lawyer Jong Melendez is also poised to win the title along with Fiel Percival (March), chess teacher Peterson Sia (July), businessman Jun Kidlat (June) and Manny Abucay (May).
The new members who have already displayed a lot of potentials are also expected to give the old timers a run for their money.
Freddie Casagan, who shared the August title with Flores, Harrison Chua, the September winner, Romy Pialan (October winner) and the last qualifier Jimmy Ty who won the November slot, are expected to display tough game.
But the non-qualifiers won’t be left out as the non-qualifying members are also holding their own tournament with the Grand Finals.
Aside from the tournaments, Cepca is also inducting the 2014-2015 officers.
Last September Cepca elected Jerry Maratas to lead the organization, along with Marvyne Guardiana (vice president, external), Dante Arguelles (vice-president, internal), Jun Olis (secretary), Jun Kidlat (treasurer), Ruel Hortelano (auditor) and Mandy Baria and Jojo Muralla as board members.
