Looking to slay a giant-A A +A
Wednesday, December 4, 2013
CEBU Queen City United (CQCU) relishes its underdog status going into its Group E match with powerhouse Global FC today and hopes to slay a giant with the help of a hometown advantage.
“We can’t be assured of a victory but our boys will give their 100 percent best,” CQCU head coach Mario Ceniza told Sun.Star Cebu.
“The key to our victory I believe will be our familiarity with the field and the support of the home crowd.”
CQCU takes on Global FC at 2 p.m. today at Cebu City Sports Center in the last Group E match in the Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart National Club Championships.
CQCU should have a slight edge over Global FC in terms of familiarity with the pitch and because the match will be played under sweltering afternoon heat.
But Global FC still has the advantage in talent because the team is loaded with Azkal players and local stars. Some of the players in the Global FC roster are Mark Hartmann, Jason de Jong, Angel Guirado, Paul Mulders, Jeffrey Christiaens, Marwin Angeles, Ed Sacapano, Misagh Bahadoran and Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez. CQCU, on the other hand, is composed of local players and a few foreigners.
CQCU must win to advance to the next round, while Global FC just needs a draw to move on to the next stage because of its huge goal difference advantage.
CQCU beat Hijos FC, 8-1; while Global FC trampled the same team, 23-0.
CQCU earlier clinched a spot to the next round after its win over Hijos FC, because then Group E only had two teams. But Global FC suddenly entered the tournament, which forced CQCU to have one more match.
