Baseball team dreams big sans financial support-A A +A
Saturday, December 7, 2013
AFTER missing out in the past two years, the Punta Princesa Elementary School baseball team is finally back in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association.
And as a bonus, the team of coach Jordan Bacarisas will be playing in front of their home fans as they face Central Visayas’ best baseball players in a bid to make it to the Palarong Pambansa next year.
Despite the lack of facilities and support both from the school and barangay officials of Punta Princesa, Bacarisas is confident that they would get the gold.
“I am confident that they would win. They can endure the hardships of the games,” said Bacarisas.
Bacarisas said he always encouraged the student-players to do well in baseball, both in practices and actual games. He also said that even if they lose, the players must not be discouraged.
Bacarasis said there were instances that the team got discouraged, especially by the lack of financial support. They have asked the barangay officials for support but received none.
“We save the prize we won and we ask for the old uniforms of those players who graduated already.”
For their uniforms in the Cebu City Olympics, the team only used the shirts given to them by the Department of Education for the opening ceremony and spent for the printing of numbers.
Donna Metante, officer in charge of the school, said that they require the student-players to practice daily.
They also acknowledge the players when they win during the school’s morning exercises.
“The administration is very happy and excited that they will represent Cebu in the Cviraa,” Metante said.
Team captain Van Lemuel Wabe said he hopes none of his teammates will get sick and continue to train for the Cviraa, while catcher Kirt Unabia Echavez is excited to participate in his first regional meet.
Aside from the two, the other members of the team are Paolo Codella, Mathew Gallarde, Philipp Angocs, Owe Laborte, Sebastian Wabe, Louie Tapales, Kiano Silaya, Halley Trocio, Yancy Atillo and Byron Po. (Jave Matugas & Angelus Jalalon, USJ-R Mass Com Interns)
