PHOENIX FC is off to a hot start in the 16th Aboitiz Football Cup after going unbeaten in the opening day of the biggest annual football tournament in Cebu City yesterday at the Aboitiz Field.
Both its squads in the Under-11 and Under-13 divisions clinched victories in their first match of the tournament. Phoenix FC convincingly beat Paref-Springdale, 3-0, in the Under-11 category and edged out Tabor Hill FC, 2-1.
Bernie Omefranca hit the first goal of the Phoenix FC Under-11 team, while Derik Mancao and Vince Caturza struck in the 3th and 38 minutes to complete the rout.
Its Under-13 squad had a tougher time against a competitive Tabor Hill FC side. Saman Vatandost found the back of the net in the sixth minute before Jomar Palang would score the equalizer in the 28th minute. However, Vatandost wouldn’t let his team down and hit the winning goal a minute after.
In other Under-11 matches, Lahug FC-A crushed Tabor Hill FC, 4-1; University of San Carlos (USC)-BED thrashed BMALV FC, 7-0; Tabor Hill FC slammed Warzhockz, 4-1; and Dynamo FC was victorious against Lahug FC-B, 3-0.
Center for International Education (CIE) edged out Inayawan FC, 2-1; while Warzhockz Famball pounded on Guardian Striker FC, 5-1 in the Under-13 division.
Canduman FC easily beat Bright Academy-B by forfeiture in the Under-9 division.
Talisay Raskals outclassed St. John Seminary, 6-0; Mactan Camellanz destroyed BMALV, 13-1; and USC-BED settled to a scoreless draw with CIE in the Boys Under-15 category.
In the only Girls Under-15 match, Tabor Hill FC beat Bright Academy, 14-0 landslide.
Abellana National School (ANS)-Pomeroy salvaged a 2-2 draw with Macatan Camellanz in the only Boys Under-18 match of the day.
ANS-Pomeroy’s Kennedy Cuizon and Mactan Camellanz Harvey Dungog both showed their individual brilliance in the match.
Cuizon drew first blood and scored the first goal of the match for a 1-0 lead for ANS-Pomeroy in the 45th minute. After halftime, Dungog retaliated and scored back-to-back goals in the 59th and in the 62nd minutes to give Mactan Camellanz the lead.
Cuizon, however, would answer 10 minutes later and scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute for the draw.
