Cobras open campaign in PCCL final four-A A +A
Sunday, December 8, 2013
THE long and winding road to glory begins today for the Southern Island champions Southwestern University Cobras as they open their campaign in the 2013 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Round of 4 at the Ateneo Blue Eagles Gym today.
The Cobras will start their campaign against the UAAP champions De La Salle University Green Archers at 2 p.m. today. The match will be aired live over at Studio 23.
The Cobras, who won the Southern Island championship over archrival University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 68-60, last Nov. 20, left Cebu yesterday morning with high hopes of improving on their fourth place finish last year.
The Cobras will be joined DLSU Green Archers, NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions and the Luzon-Metro Manila titlists Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
FEU, the winner of the 2005 edition is a surprise finalist.
Although they lost two of its most prolific scorers RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo, the Tamaraws, UAAP’s no.3 team, still proved to be a tough squad following its 83-73 win over NCAA no.3 team San Sebastian College Recoletos Stags.
FEU then pulled a masterful 88-70 win over the National University Bulldogs then beat UAAP runner-up University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers 71-68 in the Luzon-Metro Manila championship, for their ticket to the final four.
On the other hand, the SWU Cobras are tougher and stronger compared to the team that was led by Cameroonian Benoit Mbala last year.
The Cobras has more to offer compared to last year, when coach Yayoy Alcoseba had to rely only on a handful of talents.
This time, SWU has a lethal back court combination of Mark Jayven Tallo and the ever-reliable Monbert Arong. They also have the quick-footed Adams Mohammed, who will man the wing for the Cobras.
Down low, Cameroonian Landry Sanjo might not be as explosive as Mbala but he has proven to be more hardworking and quicker, while behemoth Fabrice Seiwie has improved much since he debuted with the Cobras during the Pre-Season Flying V tournament last summer.
Helping Sanjo secure position and second chance points for the Cobras are workhorses Bernie Bregondo and Daryl Goloran.
