SAN Roque Rehab (SRR) and Avengers opened their campaigns on a strong note in the men’s open division of the 16th Aboitiz Football Cup on the Aboitiz Field.
SRR easily disposed of Magone, 5-1, while the Avengers needed a late push to walk away with a slim 1-0 win over CAFC.
At first it was a very competitive battle between SRR and Magone. SRR’s Lawrence Colina scored the opening goal with just 10 minutes of regulation. However, Jesselex Sebalda scored the equalizer in the 42nd minute.
The draw was short-lived as Harry Bordalba put SRR back on the lead with a goal two minutes later. In the second half, Magone started to slow down and it was all SRR from then on. Adrianne Mejaran added another goal to give SRR a 3-1 lead. Jake Ricaplaza scored in the 74th minute from point blank range, while Michael Ruete converted his penalty near the end of regulation for the lopsided win.
Meanwhile, It looked as if Avengers and CAFC was going to end in a scoreless drew but Dan Montilla hit the back of the net in the 78th minute to lift the Avengers to victory.
Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) outclassed University of San Carlos (DBTC), 3-0, in the Under-23 division.
Paul Ogar scored in the 58th minute for the first goal of the match, while Christopher Ngwuta scored two goals in the 66th and 73rd minutes for the rout.
University of the Visayas (UV) scored an easy 3-0 default win over Continental AFS in the other Under-23 match.
