Globalport nails 3rd straight win in PBA Philippine Cup-A A +A

MANILA — Globalport Batang Pier trounced Alaska Aces, 94-84, to post their third straight win and fourth overall in the 39th PBA Philippine Cup elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum last night.
Batang Pier started strong as they came up with a lot of firepower and tight defense to secure their first three-game streak since joining the league in 2012. And with the win, coach Richie Ticzon’s team moved to the fourth spot with a 4-3 win-loss slate, while
the Aces remained at the eighth spot with 2-5 card.
Veteran Solomon Mercado conspired with rookie Terrence Romeo to put Batang Pier on top 27-20 in the first 12 minutes of the game and went on to take a big 20-point advantage, 55-35, at the half.
The 6’1” guard Mercado, a fifth overall pick by Alaska in 2008, fired 20 points in the first half alone while the 5’11 former FEU Tamaraws Romero also scored 17 in the first half to lead Batang Pier’s onslaught.
“We were able to play good defense and sustained all the runs in the second half. It’s a good win for us. We were able to hit big shots and we executed our game plan very well down the stretch. We won’t look at the record, we just want to play hard every time.
We just want to work very hard and the wins will come to us,” said Globalport coach Richie Ticzon
Mercado finished with 26 points and four rebounds and was 10 of 13 from the free throw lane. Romero finished with 21 points, while Jay Washington had 13, Ryan Roose Garcia added 13.
With their gun all blazing, Globalport continued with their spirited play and stretched the gap to 21 points thrice, the last was at 68-47 on Mercado’s two free throws off a foul by Jv Casio still 6:28 emaining in the third period.
Casio led Alaska with 28 points, Sonny Thoss scored 13. The Aces played without Calvin Abueva due to injury.
