TWELVE monthly champions will slug it out as the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) holds its 2013 Grand Finals today at the Lola Soling’s Barkada Grill and Restobar in Casuntingan, Mandaue City.
Last year’s grand champion, Rey Flores, will have his hands full as he tries to keep the crown when he faces the different monthly champions today.
Flores, a retired ship captain, will face the likes of the April qualifier Maggi Dionson, February champion and National Master Arnold Cadiz, January winner and lawyer Jong Melendez, Fiel Percival (March), chess teacher Peterson Sia (July), businessman Jun Kidlat (June) and Manny Abucay (May).
The new members of Cepca are also aiming to make mark and give the old timers a run
for their money.
They are Freddie Casagan, who shared the August title with Flores, Harrison Chua, the September winner, Romy Pialan (October winner) and the last qualifier Jimmy Ty, who won the November slot.
On the sideline, the non-qualifiers will also have their own tournament, which will be played simultaneously with the Grand Finals.
The tournament format is a five-round Swiss System with 20-minutes time control for the non-qualifiers. The grand finals will be a round-robin format also with 20-minutes time control.
“For the Grand Finalists, we will divide them into two brackets with six players each side and will follow a round robin format. The top 2 players from each group will then advance to the crossover semifinal round with the No.1 players to play the white pieces. The winners will play for the championship while the losers will play for the third place. All games will have 20 minutes time control,” tournament committee chairman Jun Olis told Sun.Star Cebu.
