THE grassroots level of Cebu basketball got a huge boost after the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) earned a national brand partner, Alaska Milk, to hold a year-round tournament starting in 2014.
“It is a perfect tie up with CYBL because their goal in the grassroots program is also our goal,” Alaska Milk Sports Development head Dickie Bachmann said in yesterday’s press conference at Yayoy’s Grill announcing the partnership of CYBL and Alaska.
Around 50 youth teams have been tapped to compete in the Alaska Basketball Cup Cebu (ABCC), which will kick off this January. There will be two divisions, Division 1 in which it will have three age groups – Under-16, Under-13 and Under-10; and Division 2 with two age groups – Under-16 and Under-13.
The ABCC has already plotted its schedule wherein there will be tournaments lined-up next year. The 1st ABCC Conference starts on Jan. 25 and will run until March. It will be followed by the ABCC Summer League in April and May, while the last installment of the year will be the ABCC D-League from August to November.
This development will keep the youth players busy, which PBA great and Alaska Basketball Camp Director Jojo Lastimosa should be a huge help to honing the skills of our grassroots cagers.
“You need exposure. You improve as you play,” said Lastimosa. “The more tournaments we create for the kids the better.”
The CYBL started in 2007, in which basketball tournaments were limited. It started to grow and more and more schools and teams have joined. The CYBL’s grassroots program has produced some good players through the years which include the likes of Arnie Padilla, Henry Asilum and Jerie Pingoy.
Some of the goals of the ABCC is to be the main basketball tournament of Cebu for the Under-16, Under-13 and Under-10 division. It will be also adding an Under-19 division soon. The ABCC plans to become the developmental league for the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. and will complete the basketball programs for Cebu Schools.
