TWIN towers Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter combined for 41 points as Barangay Ginebra Kings trounced Air 21 Express, 78-69, to secure their sixth win on Wednesday in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Aguilar and Slaughter's domination of the shaded lane at least added more fire and intensity to the Kings run-and-gun rampage that saw the leading by as much as 18 points, 52-34, still 6:40 remaining in the third period.
“We had a bad start. We just recovered in the second quarter. After halftime they adjusted at naka-recover sila. We stuck to our defensive game-plan. It's a big help na na-control namin si Mark Cardona and Joseph Yeo. Greg Slaughter was trying his best. We always reminded of our defensive game-plan. Kailanganng active siya defensively and offensively at coachable naman sya,” said Ginebra coach Ato Agustin.
The Kings remained a strong second with a 6-1 win-loss slate, just a game behind unbeaten Petron Blaze (7-0), while the Express suffered their seventh setback against a lone win. Ginebra's lone loss was at the hand of Meralco, 87-100, on Dec. 3.
“Our record now is 6-1 at nasa second spot kami pero kailangan pa namin manalo para ma-earn yung bonus na twice-to-beat. Kailangan more confidence sa team at sana makapasok kami sa quarterfinals at semis,” added Agustin.
After falling behind by a lone point, 15-16, in the opening canto, the Ginebra had Slaughter, Aguilar and Chris Ellis firing at close range to grab the lead for good 41-26 at the half. The closest Air 21 could get from there was five points, 65-70, on Joseph Yeo’s back-to-back baskets still 5:29 to go.
Aguilar finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds and eight blockshots, while Slaughter had 19 points and 10 from Chris Ellis. Joseph Yeo led the Express with 28 points, KG Canaleta added 14 and eight from Taulava.
