MANILA — San Mig Coffee and Barako Bull try to gain a share of the sixth spot when they face separate foes Friday in the 39th PBA Philippine Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The reigning Governor’s cup titlist Coffee Mixers meet Globalport Batang Pier at 8 p.m. following the Energy Cola and Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters encounter at 5:45 p.m.
A win by both San Mig Coffee and Barako Bull will enable them to forge a tight four-way tie from sixth to ninth positions along with Meralco and Alaska, which have similar 3-5 win-loss slates.
Coach Tim Cone’s Coffee Mixers will collide with Globalport Batang Pier coming from a pulsating 90-88 win over Barako Bull to secure their only second victory in seven matches last Tuesday.
But they will be meeting Batang Pier, who are on a three-game winning streak, their hottest campaign so far since joining the league in 2012. Their latest victims were the Alaska Aces, 94-84, last Dec. 13, with Solomon Mercado dropping 26 points and Terrence Romeo hitting 21 points.
Jay Washington and Ryan Roose Garcia likewise contributed 13 apiece to continue their rise to the fourth spot in a tie with Rain or Shine at similar 4-3 card.
In the other game, it looks like a tall order for the slumping Energy Cola, which dropped their fifth straight loss, 90-88, at the hands of San Mig Coffee on Tuesday.
Coach Bong Ramos wants to end the slump, which came after a 2-0 start. They will be opposed by defending titlist Tropang Texters, who regained poise and confidence when they escaped with a 90-87 win over Rain or Shine also on Tuesday.
