THE League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) National Vice President for the Visayas and Tuburan Mayor Democrito “Aljun” Diamante are seeking to unite all the mayors in Cebu under one direction.
His first step is to bring them closer through a friendly chess competition in the Mayor Democrito “Aljun” Diamante and Vice Mayor Danny Diamante 1st Inter-Town and Cities Chess Team Tournament on Dec. 28 and 29 in Tuburan town plaza.
“Being the LMP Cebu President and the LMP National vice president for the Visayas, my thrust it to unite all the mayors in Cebu. Ako gyud paningkamutan nga magkahiusa ang tanang mga mayor sa Sugbo. Pinaagi niining chess team tournament hinaut nga mao na ni ang sugod sa among panaghiusa,” Diamante told reporters at the press conference held at Harold’s Hotel yesterday.
That is why the tournament will carry the theme “Cutting Diversity Through Chess.”
But besides his dreamed unification, Diamante stressed that the tournament hopes to encourage kids to play chess because it would sharpen the minds of the players and would made them mentally tough.
Tournament chief arbiter FA Marvin Ruelan on the other hand, announced that there are already 18 teams, who had already confirmed their participation with 10 more waiting in line to complete their respective rosters.
According to Ruelan, the two teams from Mandaue City are the teams to beat in the tournament.
“The other Mandaue team is lead by Eden Diano (the highest-rated, non-titled player in Cebu), while the other is led by National Master Leonardo Alidani. Bogo City is also a strong team with Richard Natividad playing Board 1 as well as Minglanilla, which had Mario Mangubat at board one,” Ruelan stressed.
The tournament will give out a total of P74,000 with the top prize to pocket P30,000 and up to the fifth placing team will receive a cash prize as well as the top board players.
Pending on the success of this event, Diamante is hoping he could host a National Inter-Town and Cities tournament in his town.
“Kon unsay resulta ani nga tournament basin maka host ta og national team tournament.
I could bring this up to the national executive committee and I could seek for support from the governor for a tournament of this magnitude,” Diamante said while crossing his fingers.
