Sanchez to face Vargas today in Mexico-A A +A
Saturday, December 21, 2013
PROMISING young boxer Ernie Sanchez returns to Mexico today to renew the Filipino-Mexican rivalry.
The 21-year-old Sanchez, a native of Manny Pacquiao’s hometown Gen. Santos City, takes on unbeaten Mexican up-and-comer Rey Vargas for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Youth super bantamweight belt at the Gimnasio Municipal de Chihuahua.
Sanchez is looking for payback after dropping unanimous verdict in the hands of Andres Gutierrez in Mexico last month.
A victory over Vargas should catapult Sanchez’s career because the 23-year-old Mexican is world-rated.
Vargas is ranked No. 13 in the WBC and No. 6 in the International Boxing Federation (IBF).
Vargas, who made his pro debut in 2010, has beaten the likes of Filipino journeyman Juanito Rubillar and former world title contender Cecilio Santos.
