BARAKO Bull had seven players scoring with double figures to trounce Meralco Bolts, 99-86, yesterday to end a six-game losing skid in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Denok Miranda, Willie Miller and Mick Pennisi combined for 45 points to lead the Energy Cola’s third win in nine matches and tied Meralco and Alaska from seventh to ninth position in the standing.
The victory, an early Christmas present for coach Bong Ramos, at least came after a heartbreaking setback to Talk ‘N Text (80-87) via overtime last Friday. Ramos said it reckindled their hope of making it to the quarterfinal round.
“We are trying to keep on pounding the rock. All our games were closely-fought.
Hinihintay ko kung hanggang kailan kakayanin ng mga players ko ang sunod-sunod na talo. At sa wakas bumigay na rin. Hopefully na break na talaga namin ang losing jinx.
We were able to execute very well kaya na-control namin ang laro. Thank God, we were able to get over the hump," said Ramos, whose team will take a short break before taking Rain or Shine on Dec. 27.
Mark Macapagal and JC Intal wasted no time as they conspired a short run to take a 24-19 upperhand, which later balooned to 11 points, 50-39, on Miranda's lay up a few seconds before the half.
The 6’8” Pinissi scored six straight points to post their biggest lead, 84-66, with still 9:36 remaining in the fourth period. Meralco tried to stop the Energy Cola's spirited game but to no avail.
