Devastation moves runners-A A +A

THE Cebuano runners had a memorable experience as they joined “Tindog Tacloban: A Unity Run for Hope” last Sunday in Tacloban City and dedicated their participation in the 2014 Cebu City Marathon (CCM) slated on Jan. 12 for the survivors of super typhoon Yolanda.
The CCM, in its 7th year, is one of the highlights of the city’s celebration of Sinulog, which is a festival in honor of the Señor Santo Nino.
Jidan Jakosalem, who will be running in the 2014 CCM in the 42K category, led A Runners Circle (ARC)-Cebu in Tacloban. He was overwhelmed to see a lot of Cebuanos in Tacloban supporting the cause and will dedicate his CCM run for the survivos, and also pray for the fast recovery of the victims in Tacloban as well as the towns in northern Cebu.
“I Think Tacloban’s current situation is on recovery as a whole. But while we were running, I just couldn’t help noticing how strong Yolanda really was. Cables, beams, roofs, structures were tangled like a thread. Not in my wildest dream ideas that the strong winds and the storm surge can carry and put it on top of a house,” said Jakosalem.
Jakosalem said they ran around Tacloban City wearing a racebib, which had a message of hope.
“I noticed one runner wrote that ‘We’re roofless but not hopeless. Amazing Taclobanon survivors,’” said Jakosalem.
Meanwhile, Lester Tabada, who is a member of the Tenderfoot Organization of Enthusiastic Striders, said the changes from the original distance of 10k to 18k was due to the needs of runners, since most of them (especially the Cebuanos) are on training for the CCM.
“We can’t bring their training program for the event. So it’s an LSD sort of race. The farther they ran in Tacloban, the better. The sight was worth it,” said Tabada.
Those who came from Cebu are Joecelyn B. Hortizano, Tristan Jasper Camacho, Ariel Pellejero, ultra-runner Noel Tillor, Jezerel Baguio, Jakosalem, Toledo Adik sa Dagan (TAD) Analisa Rosalita, Baby Marites Bitbit, Suzanne Unabia, Willie Estepa and Ungo runner Lyra Valles.
