MANILA—Jeff Chan connected a triple in the last 8.2 seconds to lift Rain or Shine past Barako Bull, 99-95, in the 39th PBA Philippine Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last night.
The 6’2” forward Chan, a 17th overall pick by Red Bull in 2008, received a pass from Jervi Cruz and immediately went for the basket to move the Elasto Painters on top, 97-95, and seal the win. Rain or Shine boosted its hold of the fourth spot with a 6-3 win-loss slate, just half a game behind Talk ‘N Text, which is at 6-2.
Rain or Shine, which played without center Beau Belga due to injury, led by as much as 14 points in the opening canto and later kept a 56-42 advantage at the half, thanks to the Bacolod City-born Chan, who scored 19 points in the first half alone. He had 12 in the first period highlighted with three-of-three in the three-point zone.
The former FEU Tamaraws Chan finished with 34 points and six rebounds and was seven-of-10 in the three-point area to lead the Elasto Painters and repeat their mastery over the Energy Cola, whom they defeated 91-83 in their first meeting on Dec. 1.
“We played a bad second half. Everything we gained in the first half, we lost in the second because we relaxed. Jeff Chan saved the game for us. It was his shot that won us the game. Barako Bull gave us a really tough time, they didn’t give up even when we had a double-digit lead. We were lucky to survive a good offensive night from those guys,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
Barako Bull, which dropped to solo ninth with 3-7 card, weathered a 9-0 run by Willie Miller, Dorian Pena and Rico Maierhofer to grab the lead, 95-94, only 18.1 seconds to go. But Chan retaliated with the decisive triple to save the day for the Elasto Painters. The Energy Cola had enough time to grab the lead but in the return play, JC Intal lost the ball to Gabe Norwood for two free throws.
