CEBU’s rising female junior netter Jana Marie Pages eyes winning back-to-back titles in her last stint in the Batang Pinoy National Championships set this Jan. 28- Feb. 1 in Bacolod City.

Pages, 15, won the gold medal in the girls singles two years ago in the national finals and will be representing Team Cebu City along with Zethley Mae Alferez, Shyne Villareal and Sheena Camporedondo. In the boy’s team will be Jan Godfrey “Noynoy” Seno and Christopher Encarnacion, among others.

“Winning the Batang Pinoy is one of Jana’s main goals this year. We’re hopeful to win back-to-back, considering that this will be Jana’s last Batang Pinoy,” said John, the father of Pages.

In 2013, Pages made an impressive performance after winning four titles in the girls 16 under and five titles in the 18 under division.

Meanwhile, Cebu City Sports Commission Chairman Edward Hayco said that he hopes that Team Cebu City, which will be sending more than 100 representatives to the game, will be able to bring home the gold medals in the events they are taking part in.

Cebu will be fielding athletes in karatedo, dancesport, swimming, basketball, 3-on-3, boys and girls chess, softball, volleyball, sepak takraw, arnis, boxing, weightlifting, table tennis, taekwondo, karatedo and athletics.

“I hope we will be able to perform and deliver,” said Hayco.

According to Batang Pinoy project director Atty. Jay Alano of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the event will finally push through after it was postponed because of super typhoon Yolanda.

“Everything’s ready. It’s already all systems go after it was postponed due to typhoon Yolanda that badly damaged the entire Region 7.”

“It was supposed to be last Nov. 19-23 but typhoon Yolanda affected 43 areas that are joining the Batang Pinoy, so we decided to postpone it,” said Alano.

Just like the Palarong Pambansa, the Batang Pinoy is also a multi-event tournament, which is part of the grassroots development program of the PSC, the country’s sports governing body.

According to the Batang Pinoy website, the event was organized because of the absence of a national competition program for in-school and out-of-school children ages 15 and below, especially those were not given the privilege to develop basic athletic skills to become a sports champion.
