MILAN Melindo and Genesis Servania started the year right, gaining some much-needed experience overseas.
Melindo and Servania, along with ALA Gym head trainer Edito Villamor, left for the US after the holiday season for a monthlong training camp there.
According to ALA Promotions vice-president Dennis Cañete, Melindo and Servania will be based in San Diego, where the first ALA Gym in the US will be built.
Both prospects will visit Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym and Erik Morales’ boxing gym in Mexico for much-needed training.
“It will always be good for our fighters to see what’s out there and experience sparring against other types of fighters, especially in Mexico and US.
This is their first time and I’m sure this would really help them improve, especially their mindset,” said Cañete.
Both Melindo and Servania experienced the biggest stage of boxing last year after seeing action in huge Top Rank events in Macau.
Melindo fought twice in Macau last year. He scored an impressive stoppage over Tommy Seran in April, but lost by unanimous decision to World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada three months after. That was Melindo’s first world title shot and also his first loss.
