New season, new coaches-A A +A
Saturday, January 11, 2014
THE University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars and the University of San Carlos Warriors will have new coaches calling the shots for them in the next Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) season.
The Jaguars hired veteran coach Jun Noel to guide the team, replacing Edito Salacut, while ex-PBA star Junthy Valenzuela took over the head coaching job from Julian Macoy.
Both Salacut and Macoy, however, will continued serving their teams as assistant coaches.
Noel and Valenzuela assumed their posts when their teams played during the UniGames in Bacolod October of last year.
Noel of Consolacion, Cebu, had coached a lot of battles including the defunct Philippine Basketball Amateur League (PABL) where he called shots for the Cebu-based Mama’s Love, the defunct Metroplitan Basketball Association (MBA) as the head coach of the Negros Slashers, and lately he was with the Misamis Oriental Meteors playing in the regional leagues Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) and Liga Pilipinas.
He also coached Sunpride during the early days of the Mandaue Industrial-Commercial Athletic Association (Micaa).
Noel’s acquistion to the Jaguars’ bench would bolster the team’s strategic approach.
Valenzuela meanwhile served as assistant to Macoy last season took over in crucial games including a tussle between the Warriors and the University of Cebu Webmasters in the quarterfinals where he was thrown out of the game and eventually was suspended for
the rest of the season.
With the Warriors solely at his command now, USC is expected to go places probably better than its third place finish last year.
Another coaching changes looming ahead is that of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers.
Panthers’ longtime head coach Raul Latonio told Sun.Star Cebu of his intentions to leave the team into the hands of his assistant coach Michael Sereno, before the end of their season.
Latonio has been with the Panthers for more than 20 years and the pressing matters with the family owned school, SB Cabahug Forum for Literacy in Consolacion, made him think of surrendering his coaching job with USPF.
