SEVENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Anancio Abella from Villa Leyson Subdivision showed age is not a handicap as he joined thousands of runners half his age in finishing the 21K division of the Cebu Marathon.
Abella, who was an athlete in his high school days, stopped joining competitions when he got married, but he still jogged every other day as part of his training and physical exercise.
When he returned to running in 2001, Abella was able to win more medals as a finisher in different marathons. He also bagged the champion’s spot in the16th Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. Run in 2011 Master’s D category.
Abella admitted that he didn’t feel any difficulty while running.
“I had a steady pace because I am already used to running in the rain,” he said.
Marathons serve as his enjoyment and exercise.
“Niapil ko ani kay malingaw man ko ani unya exercise pa jud,” he said
Meanwhile, 48-year old Herman Cuanico from Silay City, Negros Occidental finished the 21K category in an hour and 40 minutes. He was one of the first of his group, the Silay Runners, to finish.
Cuanico, a veteran runner, started running early as a student athlete. However, an accident not related to running ended his career as he broke his arm on New Year’s Eve in 1996.
He returned to running in 2010 and joined competitions like the Kapamilya Run, Negros Marathon, 34th Milo National Marathon, and Labor Day Coast to Coast 65K Ultra Marathon among others.
Cuanico said he joined this year’s half-marathon, to challenge the younger individuals to also run.
“Even though I am already older, I still run to challenge the kids to run. I did it, so they, too, can,” he said.
Cuanico also shared that his success, just like any other, needs what he calls the 3D’s-- dedication, determination and discipline.
He added that running is a good sport for the youth to keep away from vices.
Like Abella, nothing hindered Cuanico’s way to the finish line. (Rhey Anne Alvarico, Bervienne Calimbo, and Fatima Secuya, USJ-R Mass Comm Interns)
