MANILA—The Ginebra San Miguel Kings stake their solo leadership when they battle Globalport Batang Pier, while defending titlist Talk ‘N Text faces San Mig Coffee in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup elimination round today at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Kings, seeking to end a five-year title drought, are currently leading the standing with a 10-2 win-loss card. Should they suffer an upset over Batang Pier, it could derail their bid for a twice-to-beat edge as another team Rain or Shine (10-3) and Petron Blaze (9-4) can still forge a possible triple tie at the top of the standing.
Coach Ato Agustin’s Ginebra faces Globalport at 5:45 p.m. while the Tropang Texters try to stop the Coffee Mixers' three-game winning run at 8 p.m.
A win by the 8-time champion Kings, who last won a title in the 1988 Fiesta Cup, would enable them to take the first twice-to-beat advantage even if they drop their last assignment against the Tropang Texters on Sunday.
On the other hand, Globalport, which is locked in a three-way tie from sixth to eighth spots with Meralco and Barako Bull with similar 5-8 win-loss slates, is in danger of losing a quarterfinal berth because ninth placer Alaska can still force a knockout playoff for the last berth if they win their last game against Barako Bull on Sunday.
The conference format calls for a knockout playoff in case of a tie in the second spot and 8th position at the end of the elimination round. The playoffs is set Monday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
In the other game, San Mig Coffee is already assured of a quarterfinal berth following its 112-93 win over Petron Blaze last Wednesday to move to solo fifth with a 6-7 record while Talk 'N Text is in solo fourth with 7-5 card.
