CEBU collegiate teams Southwestern University (SWU) and University of the Visayas (UV) renew their long-running rivalry for Cebu basketball supremacy as they face off in the opening day of the Cebu City Mayor's Sinulog Cup 2014 at the Cebu Coliseum SWU and defending Cebu Schools Athletic Association (Cesafi) collegiate division titleholders UV will raise the curtains of the four day basketball tournament at 5 PM, which was agreed upon in a meeting yesterday at Yayoy's Grill.
University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) is the other team that confirmed its participation in the mini-tournament, while University of San Carlos (USC) was also invited in the tournament that will run from Jan. 23 to 26.
The tournament will follow a single round robin format. The top two teams move on to the championship round, while the bottom two gun for third and fourth place honors.
The champion squad will earn a hefty sum of P50,000, while second placers will be given P30,000. The third and four place teams will take home P15,000 and P5,000 respectively.
Tickets are pegged at P100 for court-side seats, P50 for lower box and P30 for upper box.
The Cobras currently owns bragging rights over the Green Lancers after a 68-60 victory in the 2013 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL). SWU reached the championships of the PCCL but bowed down to De La Salle University (DLSU) in two games.
However, UV technically are the Cebu collegiate basketball kings after beating SWU in five games in the Cesafi finals.
SWU was off to a hot start in the five-game championship series taking home the first two games convincingly – 64-52 and 73-60.
But when everything was lost, UV rallied and won the last three games – 89-82, 71-66 and 64-62 – to steal the title away from then defending champions SWU.
