THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) was given due recognition by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) during its Annual Awards night held at the Centennial Hall of Manila Hotel Sunday evening.

The award was given to Cesafi “for sustaining a vigorous sports development program and for becoming a rich breeding ground of talents in basketball, football and volleyball.” The award was the first given by the PSA to a league or organization outside of Manila.

Cesafi Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Jr. received the award on behalf of the league.

“The award is a welcome recognition of the sports offiials, particularly the school owners, athletic directors, coaches, trainers and athletes of the Cesafi member-schools for their tireless efforts in promoting and developing athletic programs of their student-athletes. It is a great honor that the PSA recognized Cesafi’s contribution to the national pool of talents in the different sports activities,” Tiukinhoy told Sun.Star Cebu.

Tiukinhoy described the recognition as a proof of the league’s fruitful efforts.

“I believe Cesafi was the first league outside of Manila to be given this (citation) distinction,” Tiukinhoy added.

Cesafi’s most illustrious products include basketball centers Junemar Fajardo of the University of Cebu Webmasters and Greg Slaughter who started with the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, who were No.1 rookie picks overall in the 2012 and 2013 PBA rookie drafting, respectively.

Aside from Cesafi, Cebuano individual achievers were also given recognition.

The list includes boxers Donnie Nietes, Merlito Sabillo and Johnriel Casimero who were given major awards for a successful title defense last year; Mikeala Calamba who was part of the Taekwondo Women’s Poomsae team that won the world’s championship in Bali; Glenn Lava World Taekwondo Poomsae champion; and billiard player Rubillen Amit, who is a presidential awardee for winning the women’s world 10-ball title.
