ANDRY Sanjo continued to be the biggest problem of the University of the Visayas Green Lancers as the hard-working Cameroonian center led the Southwestern University Cobras to a 68-60 win over their rivals at the start of the four-day 2014 Cebu City Mayor’s Sinulog Cup Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.
Earlier, the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars welcomed new coach Jun Noel with a rousing 85-79 win over the University of San Carlos Warriors.
Today, the Lancers will try to break into the winners column as they play the Jaguars in the 5:30 p.m. game, while the Cobras will shoot for their second win against the Warriors at 7 p.m.
UV coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. tried to make his new players feel the rabid basketball atmosphere of Cebu as he sent four of his rookies, including the towering Cameroonian center Jean-Marie Mpouma, to start the game.
And three of the rookies got to finish the game with star guard John Abad playing
sparingly into the Lancers rotation.
With a new kid in defending him, SWU team skipper Monbert Arong had a field day as he scored 12 straight points, including two triples that helped the Cobras build a 20-6 lead a little under two minutes left in the opening quarter.
UV however managed to come back behind the efforts of Wowie Escosio, who a new facet into his game – three point shooting. He made 2 of 3 attempts to help the Green Lancers move within 29-28 before the first half ended with SWU protecting a 33-31 lead.
SWU continued to display an all-out game that enabled them to build a 48-38 lead at the 3:11 mark of the third but JV Veloso, one of the five new players of Belano, gave UV seven straight points that cut the Cobras lead to 50-45 entering the final period.
The Cobras had the game under control in the final period despite UV’s 8-3 run that put them within 60-63 in the final 1:39 seconds.
However, UV failed to score another point and Sanjo scored the final five points including a buzzer beating triple at the 1.6 seconds for the final count.
Sanjo scored the game high 22 points and Arong added 15.
Escosio was the lone Green Lancer to score in double digit with 16
