HOLY SPIRIT School (HSS) had an impressive debut, while defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) showed that they are still the team to beat this season with a lopsided win in the Under-13 age group of the Alaska Basketball Cup Cebu (ABCC) 2014 over the weekend.
HSS of Tagbilaran City earned a striking 22-point victory over University of the Visayas, 64-42, last Saturday in the Magis Eagles Arena at the SHS-AdC in Canduman, Mandaue City.
HSS led the whole game and pulled away in the final quarter for the lopsided win.
Karl Erick Nacuna and Acel Kent Pinos both scored 12 points for HSS, who will be representing Tagbilaran City in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa).
SHS-AdC breezed through University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 74-26, in the other game in the ABCC kick off.
The game was close in the early going with SHS-AdC exercising a one point lead, 12-11, at the end of the first quarter. However, the Magis Eagles employed a stifling defense in the second quarter and held USJ-R scoreless, while scoring 30 points in the quarter for a 42-11 lead.
USJ-R trimmed down SHS-AdC’s lead to 29 points in the third quarter. But once again the Magis Eagles overwhelmed USJ-R by outscoring them 16-3 in the final quarter.
Ethan Fajardo led SHS-AdC with 13 points, while Angelo Jabalon and Chris Balabat added 11 points apiece.
ABCC is a partnership between ALAska Milk and Cebu Youth Basketball League. It has drawn around 50 schools from three divisions – Under-10, Under-13 and Under-16.
Former PBA player Jojo Lastimosa was the guest in the tournament’s opening day. The ABCC also has a summer league in April and May and another tournament from August through November.
