TEAM Cebu City won two silver and one bronze medals in athletics in the first day of the 2013 Batang Pinoy National Championship in Bacolod City.

Niña Marie Antiola earned a silver in the girls 100m hurdles and Ivan Miguel Santos won a bronze finish in the 5,000 meters. Both are members of the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department team. University of Cebu (UC) jumper Chantel Tanucan also added a silver medal in the girls high jump.

UC coach Ilde Banzon, who is TCC athletics team coach, said he can’t promise to win the over-all title in athletics as there are strong athletes from Western Visayas.

“Ang taga Western Visayas kusgan sila, hurot hurot nila ang gold medals, but this is an improvement of last year’s performance wherein TCC just brought home one medal in athletics,” said Banzon.

Santos brought home the lone medal in athletics in 2012 and Banzon hopes to improve their tally today.

In volleyball, Abellana National School (ANS), led by Frankline Caballero and Axel Abatayo, bowed to Davao del Norte, 25-20,25-16 in their quarterfinal match.

“They had the height advantage, tag-as kayo ilang mga players,” said ANS coach Thelma Datig.

Meanwhile, Quezon City opened its campaign with five golds in swimming while Reymark Quezada of Baguio City captured the first gold in athletics.

Quezada, a third year high school at the Baguio City National High School, posted 17:10.15 minutes to win the boys 5,000-meter run, the first event in the five-day competition for athletes 15 years old and below.
