THE Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars face off tonight for the coveted title of the four-day Cebu City Mayor’s Sinulog Cup 2014 at the Cebu Coliseum.
The two teams were set to face each other at press time last night in their final elimination game that served as a preview of today’s finals. Before last night’s game, both SWU and USJ-R won their first two games to arrange a finals clash.
SWU beat Cebu Schools’ Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate division defending champions University of the Viasyas (UV) Green Lancers, 85-79, in the opening day of the basketball tournament. SWU has beaten UV in their last two encounters since losing to the latter in the Cesafi finals. SWU defeated University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 65-54, the following day.
USJ-R routed USC, 85-79, in their 2014 debut and then upset UV, 82-72, in overtime. UV will face USC for third place honors in the first game today.
UV owns a win over USC coming into their encounter this afternoon.
UV outclassed USC, 84-66, yesterday in the last game of the elimination round.
The Green Lancers led the whole game and weren’t threatened by an outmatched USC side.
