FELIX Shaun Balbona and Keith Claire Carlisle Morala topped their divisions in the 2014 Cebu’s Best Woodpushers PNG Qualifying tournament last Sunday at the Cebu City Sports Center Ballroom Hall.

Balbona, the gold medal winner in the Junior Boys division in the standard chess tournament in last year’s POC-PSC Philippine National Games, finished with 6.5 points in the open category, while Morala won via tie break in the women’s division.

Balbona, who started as the no.2 seed in the 40-player tournament, scored six wins and a draw, while Morala had four wins and a loss. The two earned the right to represent Cebu City in the Philippine National Games in May.

The 15-year-old Balbona defeated Jimmy Ty Jr. in Round 1, Waldo Cataquesta in Round 2, Vincent Balena in Round 3, Merben Roque in Round 4, Venancio Loyola in Round 5, drew with Mark Carl Cimafranca in Round 6 and defeated Romulo Pialan in Round 7 to top the competition.

Roque came in second after scoring 6.0 points and Carlos Moreno III took third place with 5.5 points.
